Can Apples Make You Sick?

As I sat at my computer today, doing my job like a good little worker bee, I began to feel quite nauseous. It came on me quickly, like a dark storm cloud over a small, helpless boat in the ocean. The waves of stomach discomfort washed over me, pounding my core and tapping the well of regurgitation within. I struggled to avoid the disaster, and steered myself away from my desk for a bit, and took slow, deep breaths while attempting to reach a state of anti-puke enlightenment through meditation and prayer. Slowly, with my eyes closed and my hands about my face, I began to feel the storm lifting. My urge to pray to the porcelain god receded, and I slowly found myself drifting back into the world of consciousness and health.

After this tsunami of nausea ended, and I began to feel like myself again, I began the inevitable quest of knowledge and discovery for which I am known, and tried to contemplate a possible reason for my sudden stomach storm. My first thoughts turned towards the most obvious culprit: my breakfast. I analyzed the contents of my first meal of the day, and found only nothing that would explain my current condition. I woke up and had a glass of orange juice, and a cereal bar. Then I came to work, and had a glass of water, and then a bit later, an apple.

Hmmm. Not exactly the unhealthiest breakfast ever created, now is it? So, if the breakfast as a whole was not the cause of my sickness, then perhaps it was one individual food item that was the source of my discomfort. I took aside each food item, in separate rooms, and questioned them individually about the incident. The orange juice was very suspect at first, with his dodgy gaze and his nervous ticks. Upon further interrogation, however, it was determined that the acid content of the orange juice was too high to invoke such a sudden and drastic change in stomach balance and order. Upset stomach would point towards orange juice in a lineup…but not nausea. The search must continue.

Next, I questioned the water but quickly dismissed her. Only water in vast quantities could cause a person to become physically sick, and one coffee cup full of water would not qualify as such a vast quantity.

I then chose to address the cereal bar, but with a heavy heart. I knew that this poor kid was innocent; he was too gentle and kind to be of any harm. But, protocol is protocol…and so I forced myself, through gritted teeth and closed eyes, to ask him about the possibility of his involvement in the Sudden Nausea Experience, or SNE. The possibility was there, of course. Traditional breakfast cereal bars do have all sorts of things in them that can cause stomach discomfort: sugars, carbohydrates, preservatives, dyes…but what bothered me was the fact that I had eaten this very cereal bar every other morning of this week, and never had I experienced a negative outcome. Not once. Why would it affect me today, but never before? I suppose there is a first time for everything…but that just seems too unlikely, to me.

That left the apple. That innocent, red-coated harlot of health nuts everywhere just stared at me. She licked her wax-covered body with obvious discontent as I began to talk to her about the SNE, and she laughed out loud. How could she, the perfect snack, have caused the incident? Apples don’t make people sick! People have loved her for ages, especially doctors. They hurl her maxim through the air like Frisbees, every chance they get. An apple a day, keeps the doctor away. As far as suspects go, she seemed to be the most innocent.

It was then, as my hopes to finding a cause to my stomach dilemma dwindled, that I began to think back to the incident, and analyze it more deeply. I had eaten the cereal bar when I first came into the office…and then a bit later, I had gone to get some water, and wash off my new Fuji apple in the sink. I had drank the water, and then I had slowly eaten my apple, and I chatted on the phone, and checked my email. Later on, when the nausea hit, there was only one thing that popped into my head as I teetered on the precipice of vomit-land; one thing that made the sensations in my stomach worsen with each breath…the apple.

It seemed crazy to me, at first. How could an apple make me feel nauseous? How could a healthy, fruit wonderful snack cause such horrible discomfort and sadness? I began to ask myself…can apples make you sick?

Perhaps it was the combination of the water and the apple, that caused my tummy to become too full, and caused some slight nausea. Maybe the apple was bad, or I ate it too slow? Perhaps the orange juice didn’t like the apple invading his territory?

Whatever the reason, I have decided to look into The Apple Question with more vigor, and hopefully discover some answers that will quell my thirst for knowledge about the SNE, and the possible apple connection.

If any of you have ever felt sick after eating an apple, please post a comment about it. I am here for you. Only together, can we find a cure...if there is one.

Sometimes my stomach feels wierd after eating an apple, too.

Apples are full of fiber, and pectin - which can be hard on an empty digesive system, usually an apple creates a sense of feeling full.. not nausea.. It is possible that the benign cereal bar was masquerading as a meal and was trying to overthrow the goodness of the apple. The multi-grain, aka multiple personalities of a cereal bar try to lull you into a false sense of comfort, that you really are getting appropriate nutrition... then it turns on you like a coiled snake... and hammers relentlessly at the unsuspecting track of life...

I often feel nausea after eating apples...or drinking apple juice. I think it might be the sugar.

Anonymous said...

I've heard of other people experiencing this, it's sort of a "apple intolerance" if that makes any sense. It happens to me all the time, I can only eat about half of an apple before I feel really sick and weak.

Well I feel a little encouraged...lately I have been trying to lose a little weight, so I have replaced desserts for a "healthy" apple. For about the same length of time I have been experiencing nausea about 1/2 hr. after eating along with some weakness and a slight feeling of anxiety. Perhaps you have solved my problem for me. Guess I will switch my allegiance to the banana or the orange. If you ever find the reason an apple would create this "lunch bag letdown" let me know.

Wow! I just expericed the near eruption myself. I want an answer too. I don't think it has anything to do with an empty stomach, I just had a lean cuisine panini and the apple I started on was my dessert. This sucks butt!!! Now I want a some OREO's, they don't make me nauseous.

Anonymous said...

I've had this problem for years and always wondered what it was... I find the only way I can eat an apple (and I do eat an apple a day) is to eat something else directly after eating it. (Somehow eating it last makes me sick, too, maybe just the taste lingering in my mouth??)

I get the same problem to a lesser degree with other fruits with skins - pears, grapes, etc.

Would love a medical explanation!!

I often feel nauseous, and then hungry, after eating apples. I think it has something to do with the sugar in the apple, and my own blood sugar level. I now always try to eat them with other foods (like peanut butter).

I found this thread because I just googled 'nausea after eating an apple'. I did this because, for the second time this week I have been overcome with nausea about 1/2 an hour after eating an apple. I don't think it has ever happened before. I'm feeling it now so might go and have something else to eat to see if that helps. Wierd, eh!! You try to do the right thing.. Maybe I should have had bacon and eggs instead :-)

Same here! For the last few years I have discovered that I can no longer eat an apple. I can however, like many of you eat it with something else like candy on a "candy" apple (but not the whole thing). If ever I can tolerate eating apples they'd have to be cooked..yummy...otherwise I instantly get the urge to vomit. Just today I unknowingly ate apples that were added to a salad and vomitted the contents in my belly. It's a horrible feeling.

Omg i cnt believe im nt the only one!! i have the exact same weird thing where anytime i eat an apple i get intense nausa..but only if its a fresh apple alone..i can eat it in a fruit salad wit other fruits or cooked..i didnt know thr were other ppl like me! & as a medical student im gona mk it my mission to find out why this happens..nt enuf research has bin on this topic!

First of all why has not one Medical Person told us why this is happening and also second of all I am supprised that so so many people has this happen to them though too although not quite the same as me....

My name is Jesica Bowman and also this has happened basically my whole life right after I eat an apple or at least around about two bites in it differs sometimes from time to time I just feel a little teeny tiny bit off and also I just do not want to see an apple for a while but the thought of other foods such as Spaghetti or something of that nature still intrigues me....

I am wondering though too since I have almost the same problem with almost anything with high amounts of sugar in it such as twinkys cupcakes cake and also ice cream although it feels as if it is a different type of sick I am still wondering if it is the sugar or the pectin or just something else that is makeing me sick if anyone has an answer or at least knows a Doctor or somebody who can answer these questions for us than can they answer these questions for us Please and also Thanks Yous <3 <3 :) lol

I thought something was wrong with me until I read this post and comments! I never had a problem eating apples until about a week ago. Today's the third time I felt intense nausea about 1/2 hour after eating an apple. (Gala, with peel) I have yet to throw up but this is very strange indeed. I've eaten apples all my life without trouble so I'm wondering why this is happening? There's gotta be a medical explanation for this...

Anonymous said...

As an apple lover, I have wondered about this too. could it be pesticides or wax has changed? Has antone had same feeling with organic? I never wash my fruit.

Anonymous said...

I have always had the same problem when eating apples since was a small kid at school. I have now had reasonably bad irritable bowel syndrome for about 7 years and I find that while I can often feel nausea after eating an apple, it also has then reliable effect of making me need to go to th toilet. It seems there must be a chemical reason for a system-wide response like this. I'd love to hear from a medical person. No other foods have this effect for me.

Anonymous said...

I also often get nauseous when eating apples. However, my nausea usually starts as soon as I start chewing my first bite. Most of the time, the feeling is mild and I can continue enjoying my apple. On rare occasions, the nausea is so strong that I cannot swallow the first bite and have to spit it out.

...just another me-too post...

Anonymous said...

I'm another that found this after googling "nausea" and "apples." I can usually eat a few bites and still feel fine, but I can't get anywhere close to eating an entire apple without feeling sick. This is true for me whether my stomach is empty or not.

Also, I always eat organic apples, so it doesn't seem the pesticides are the culprit (at least, in my case.)

Anonymous said...

Apples make me nauseous too. Not applesauce or apple juice just apples. I used to apples daily in college without this side effect. It comes on just as you stated, quick. I know it's the apples because it only happens with them. It pretty much happens everytime too. Every once in awhile I will be ok but once it does I won't eat apples for
Months

Yes I just ate a gala not peeled. First I was queasy then my eyes went buggy. Has happened before. I wonder if there are leftover toxins in the apple peel leftover from spraying in the orchards.

totally, just had an organic fuji and I feel like I'm going to ralph. I keep spitting in the sink. Water makes me feel worse. The thought of drinking tea makes me want to puncture my stomach with a pencil and drain the nausea out (not like it's possible...but if it was, I'd be tempted) ughhhhh Next meal: rice. Future fruits: cantaloupe, peach, nectarine, papaya (much easier on the tummy, I feel)

you're not insane. i am at work. just ate an apple for the first time in FOREVER, and literally had to run to the bathroom bc i thought i was going to spew at my desk. i came across your blog because i googled 'apples make me sick'. wtf. this is bull.

Unknown said...

Hi,

I have something similar, but it seems tied to apple pastries only, if that makes any sense. Sometimes after eating these pastries, I feel nausia slightly, but then feel lightheaded, almost like I am going to pass out. Then I run to the bathroom, and usually have a bowel movement. It seems to me almost like an allergic reaction. Started a few years ago.

Anonymous said...

Yep..me too. Just ate half a golden delicious and it took all of my effort and concentration not to throw up. This isn't the first time for me either and I also have similar attacks with bananas. I can't even smell a banana anymore...what is this? This is also the reason why I "googled" apples and nausea.

Unknown said...

I'm glad I finally googled it too. I feel car sick type nauseous after eating red apples. It's not as bad as some of you are stating your reactions are, but unsettling nonetheless.

I try not to eat them on an empty stomach.

I have zero allergies (minus one type of antibiotic that makes me ill), so this is very strange to me.

Justin said...

Hi,

I also have nausea after eating apples but worked out years ago that it is only the skin that effects me. If I have a whole apple I am usually sick within 30 mins but if I peel the apple first then I can eat 2 or 3 apples and feel no effect at all.

I eat at least 1 apple every day so this definitely works for me but even after all this time, I still feel sick if I have more than a couple of mouthfulls of apple with its skin still on.

Not sure if this will be true for everyone who has this problem but its worth a try.

I have no other health problems and only suffer a little hayfever in the summer so this problem has been quite strange but something I have worked around for years by peeling my apples first.

On a side note, it seems that whatever causes the intolerance for me is also in grapes but it is less pronounced. I have to eat quite a few and on an empty stomach to feel any nausea.

Pears are fine etc, Very weird.

I often have a very nauseous bought after eating apples. Any kind. I used to eat a small apple (granny) with cold water. It kept it down somehow. My throat and mouth itch as I eat apples also. I think its the acid that I am not able to digest properly although I LOVE them. Haven't eaten one in a few months now and I miss eating them. Pears do the same thing to me. Sometime orange juice too. Crazy thing huh?

Eb said...

Yeah I feel sick eating apples too. i used to love them. but im not sure why maybe the sweetnes, (although i love sweet food) makes me feel really sick. so i stop eating it.

My son has a problem with lots of fruit, including apples. I have tried peeling them and cooking them and the result is always the same - an upset stomach. He has a tree nut allergy and pollen allergies. He also experiences what is called Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS) whereby when he eats a fruit in a certain pollen category(melon, banana, apple, strawberry, pear, etc.) his throat itches bad enough that he refuses to eat any of these fruits. It is a real thing - look it up.

Anonymous said...

I feel the same way, does anyone know if I might be the pesticide on the skin of the apple. I was it but I'm sure I don't get all of it off.

Michael gilmore said...

Wow. I have had this problem since I was a kid. I can eat apples cooked, but within a minute of eating s fresh one peeled or not, my throat itches badly and I feel so nauseated. The same thing happens for me with cherries, plums, nectarines, and all pears except for Anjou. Not sure what's different about anjous. I tried organic- same issue. So I do not think it's the wax or pesticide. I have heard that this may an allergy to northern fruits. Possibly genetic however my sister, nephews, and daughter eat apples slot with no problem.

I often experienced nausea along with overactive salivary glands within minutes of eating an apple. Usually I have eaten it alone. If I eat it with a full meal, i'm fine. As a result, I have developed an aversion to apples in general. Strangely enough, raw carrots leave a heavy yet, empty feeling in my stomach if eaten alone, also causing nausea.

Madeline Nusser said...

Raw apples have always made me sick, too! I can eat them with a full meal and feel okay. I love the taste of them—my mom used to heat butter, sugar and cinnamon so that they'd go down without making me vomit.

This blog has made my day even though I feel queezy for the first time after eating an apple!!! I googled "apple made me nauseous" and found this blog. I have no clue why it has made me nauseous but I felt like I was going to faint and throw up!!!! This is weird....really need a medical explanation!!!

I just ate an apple, and it made me sick. I knew it would, but I ate it anyway. So I jumped online to look up why this occurs. I'm still investigating but came across your site first. I literally want to vomit right now, and how nauseous I am.

Anonymous said...

For twenty years I have suffered from apple nausea; with the feeling lasting for up to two hours after the act of digestion. In the past couple of years the same feeling comes from eating raw carrots.

Unknown said...

Whenever I eat an apple on an empty stomach, I always get nauseated. Always, always. I try to only eat them after I've got some meat already sitting in my stomach...or in pie form. ;)

Unknown said...

yes - I get apple nausea! It is such a horrible feeling and comes on so quickly. I can't figure out when it is, or is not going to happen though, so I just avoid apples now despite the fact I quite like them. Of concern is today I ate a mandarin, and the same things happened :( I've never had it with a mandarin before

Anonymous said...

Add me to this list! I get nauseous while eating/after eating apples or carrots! what the heck is it?
Well, I'm glad I'm not the only weirdo! :)

Anonymous said...

This happens to me too. It's horrible! But it's not just with apples but it happens with certain vegetables like carrots too. I think maybe it had something to do with eating them on an empty stomach although I don't really think my stomach was that empty when I ate them...who knows? But I feel for you--it's really uncomfortable!

Anonymous said...

I am at a loss also in regard to this nausea thing. Apples, oranges, strawberries, all melon categories, grapes, most all veggies especially corn, broccoli, and carrots all make me want to vomit. I can't go to a party and eat the raw veggie tray like everyone else or I'll be the weird girl who got sick at the party; which no doubt they'd all blame on me drinking too much when in fact its the vegetables or fruits!!!

Anonymous said...

I'm similar, kind of.

I don't get nauseous if I eat some form of an apple by itself, but if I have any pills with it, I get nauseous.

It's strange. Whether it's apple juice, applesauce, or just an apple I get nauseous whenever I combine any form of pill (multivitamin, advil, anything) and apples.

Sometimes I honestly forget then I wonder why I'm feeling nauseous then I realize... it was that dang apple!

Anonymous said...

EVERYTIME i eat an apple, i feel SO nauseous! =/

Anonymous said...

This is new for me but now every time I start to munch on carrots I very soon get that early warning of impending nausea attack which is my mouth filling with a watery substance which I head for someplace to begin spitting it out and after several go rounds of that I get very queasy with the urge to vomit. Then either I begin vomiting or else the nausea begins to subside. This same thing has happened for a while now if I snack on just about any kind of bread eaten alone ...what the heck is going on?

I have always become mildly nauseated a few minutes after eating unpeeled apples. Peeled apples, on the other hand, never nauseate me.

After some searching on the net, I found this article:
http://www.thehealthierlife.co.uk/natural-health-articles/nutrition/rutin-health-boosting-chemical-00232.htm

Apparently, apple peels contain Rutin, a nutrient that can cause nausea in some people. Maybe there is a link?

Kait said...

Yes. I too have become nauseus after eating an apple. It can sit in my stomach like a hard ball of lead and if I am the least bit unwell it will curdle and come right back up. Bleck. This is the secret apple farmers have kept hidden for years! It is time for the truth to come out!

Morgan Brown said...

I just came upon this post after a google search "apples make me nauseous" I cant figure it out. Raw apples make me sick. I wash them and I peel them, but still I get nauseous almost immediately. But if they are cooked then I have no problem at all. Weird.

might be related to gallstones. the apple intake usually is healthy but for some individuals eating cucumbers, cabbage or apples means serious urge to throw up within half an hour after eating it.

nice way to describe your investigation, hope you get to find out the motive for the apple's crime :))

I also arrived here after searching for "apple nausea". I'm trying to pinpoint why I seemingly get ill within 10-20 minutes after eating an apple. This isn't always the case, however. Maybe it's the brand(s) I'm buying? Could it be pesticides? I love apples so this kinda sux!

Stephan said...

Me, too - apples and carrots. At least I know I'm not crazy... at least in terms of "apple nausea"...

Anonymous said...

Its because apples are very acidic. If you eat an apple, especially on an empty stomach, the acid will irritate your stomach and cause the nauseous feeling. Try eating some soda crackers before or after the apple, it should help.

Olive said...

So glad I'm not alone! I've been allergic to fruits and most veggies almost all of my 23 years on this Earth. Only recently have I started eating such things again on a more regular basis. The things I can't eat though, are apples...as they make me nauseous as well. I've noticed that the more tart the apple, the less nausea...so I tend to stick to the green variety. Still very frustrating though as I do love the taste of a very good apple.

Anonymous said...

It's related to the pollen. I also get mild hayfever in the early spring months. Another fruit that gives me nausea is pear. Peeling them does help though. Apart from that, I just don't eat them :o(

Perhaps the absence of any medical professional giving their take on this "medical marvel" only proves
the idea that apples were never meant to be eaten every day anyway. At least not by us humans. I mean, If all of us have this same problem in common, it can't be happenstance. Either certain people are have "apple resistance" or everyone shares in this phenom and, like I've been for so many years, are just too embarrassed to admit it and question the SNE of the stealth-like so-called "healthy" apple. I can't remember a time when eating an entire apple in one sitting didn't leave me feeling queezy. But, because it's become a landmark of popular culture to assume that the apple is "wholesome" and "nutritious", I've never expressed my feelings towards her out of fear that I might be ridiculed by my seemingly apple-loving peers. But who knows, even they could have been sharing my same feelings towards her.

Anonymous said...

I have had this since I was a kid. The medical field attributes it to an oral allergy (to apples.) For me the solution is to peel the skin off the apple (it has many many times the allergy-causing contents than the rest.) I also have/had hay fever which is apparently related.

Peel your apples. It should stop the nausea or at least lessen it!

Hi, I have the same problem. Sickness comes during chewing an apple. I exclude preservatives because I eat apples from my small orchard.
I had a pollen allergy but it vanished two years ago, maybe she's not vanished and only gets change to apples? What is also interesting, there are sort of apples which are tolerated by my stomach. They are quite small, white in x-section,red skin, and 'plump' in structure... I must only remember the name. Luk

Once I take the first bite I feel the need to vomit... I usually have to have it with any drink other than water that will rid my mouth of the apple taste whilst eating it. Usually drinks with really strong taste such as cranberry juice or orange juices removes the taste of apple from my mouth replacing it with the refreshing taste of cranberries or oranges. Furthermore, after the taste of the juices have subsided and I think back to how I recently finished the apple a few moments ago the nauseating feeling returns and I have to fight puking for several minutes. As a result, I strongly hate apples with a passion!! :)

I love apples but within the last year I've noticed that after eating them, I get nauseous and my stomach can't decide if it wants to feel upset or hungry. I love apples so I thought maybe just eating half an apple would be okay but that was a no go. I ate half an apple with some peanut butter about two hours ago and I've ben dealing with an uphappy stomach since about twenty to thirty minutes after eating. I haven't actually vomited from them yet but now I'm worried that will happen next. Carrots also cause this now too :(
I got that allergen skin scratch test done this year and it came back negative to everything. I read earlier that cross contamination of certain fruits and veggies with pollen could be what's causing the distress. But if the skin tests came back negative then why would I be having a reaction?

I'm not a doctor but I recently found out that they put petroleum wax on fruits including apples , plums, watermelons to make them shiny. If you're allergic to pesticides, these thin-skinned fruits absorb it all. If you're allergic to latex be careful with the petroleum wax in fruits as it can cause severe allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention-Benadryl, epi-pen, 911. Look up proposition 37 -it's a law that's trying to pass that would require companies to out this info on foods so we know exactly what we are eating.

I just had the same thing happen. I Just ate a large fresh granny smith apple with a glass of water and green tea and just as I finished the apple I felt like I was going to vomit. It lasted for at least ten minutes. I did skip lunch so my tummy was probably empty. I've always loved apples and usually eat a couple each week however what's differant now is that I've started trying to eat better and differently for the past week. I cut out processed foods, no sugar in my coffee, no sweets at all, less dairy, more fruit and veggies and lots of water. It suprisingly has been easy, I think because I've put my mind to it. Anyway, I'm wondering if it is a blood sugar related thing. I'm not diabetic but I've obviously lowered my sugar intake lately. This was the first apple I've eaten this week. On the other hand, I've been eating other fruits this week like oranges, berries and bananas...and they didnt make me feel sick. I am going to make a point to ask my doctor about this during my next appt.

(There may be problems for some folks with pesticides, peels, etc, but that's irrelevant for others who grow and/or peel their own.) It seems to be the "hardness" of the fruit, is the only way I can describe it, but sometimes I'm okay, and often not, when eating either raw carrots or raw apples: I may feel fine for a bit, then this "feeling" comes over me-- something "weird" and definitely uncomfortable in my throat, jaws? Then, the "Uh-oh, I feel like I have to puke" feeling comes in waves. Sometimes it dissipates, sometimes I puke. Sigh. I enjoy both carrots and apples other times. Always feel better after puking. Doesn't seem to matter what else, if anything, I've eaten before and/or with the carrots and/or apples... Occasionally, recently, eating (hard, dry) tortilla chips give the faintest beginning sensation of the same... What the heck?

I just got sick on a home grown pear but this article helped some till now... I hope its the skin though, because I heard somewhere the fiber in some fruits you cant fully digest but it just passes through your system. I honestly dont know how true that is, but I guess if it's not properly digesting & I did eat it late at night on an empty stomach its possibly why everyone here is getting sick. In theory, he fibers in the skin are too thick to digest?

I Vomit EveryTime I Eat An Apple......Clockwork

I been eating about 2 fujis a week the last 6 weeks. Today I had one on a totally empty stomach about 2 hours after waking. It came back up fast! Internet, provide answers! Really, I suspect it was the empty stomach combined with apple's acidity and not the strongest digestive system. I have oral allergy syndrome, but i don't percieve it is related.

I'm so glad someone finally posted something about this. I guess that old saying an apple a day keeps the doctor away is just a myth. A couple nights ago, my dad and I shared an apple together and by 2 a.m., we were both paying for it with our stomachs and intestines. He started throwing up by then and it lasted for about a whole day. He sort of thinks he had a stomach virus, but I'm not so sure. He also had diarrhea. I, on the other hand, just had the runs a couple times and was severely dehydrated by the end of the day because I was afraid to eat or drink. The green apple we ate was starting to bruise a bit and the skin was a little soft but mostly firm. I thought it was still good, but I guess not. One thing's for sure. I'm never eating apples again. We were better off eating a bag of Doritos instead. Just thinking about that apple makes me squeamish...ugh!

Wow this site helped a lot. My poor little girl is having this same problem. She loved apples it was always her snack of choice. Out of the blue this week she has vomited after apple slices ,apple sauce ,and apple juice. It helps to know she isn't the only one. She's four years old. Have a great weekend everyone

Recently I've been struggling to drink apple juice, only the own-brand supermarket juices however. When I drink it I feel nauseous for days. I did some research and I found some information saying some apple juices contain a sugar that the digestive system sometimes just can't digest. I figured this might be the answer, but the strange thing is the only cure seems to be a 24 hour starvation and then after I feel as good as new, the same as a virus. It's been bought on by apple juice twice in one month now, I think I will be avoiding it in future.

It’s called a Herxheimer reaction. Herxheimer reactions are a result of inflammation in the body. When you do a detox, it allows your body to release old bacteria, viruses, and toxins which are harmful to your system and need to be flushed out in order for you to truly be in a state of health.
During a cleanse, the juicing, vitamins and minerals are specially combined to kill off bacteria, viruses, parasites and toxins and to dislodge old putrefied food and materials that have built up in the body and in the cells. The reaction occurs when injured or dead bacteria/viruses are released allowing the decomposing endotoxins into the blood and tissue faster than the body can handle comfortably.
This provokes an inflammatory response which presents itself in an over exaggerated form of whatever the original illness was. For example, if you still have flu virus in your body, you will feel temporarily like you have the flu. You may feel feverish; have a headache or just feel very run down. It may come and go but will pass usually in a matter of hours or days.

I found this article this morning! Thank you for the smiles and laughs after this event! My worse thought was morning Sickness! UGH! After trying to eat Bread cautiously I felt fine, thankfully no more nausea. The Apple didn't taste strange, but I swear as soon as it hit my stomach I felt beyond sick, gagged over the sink and had to make a run to pray to the porcelain deities. Hopefully there is an explanation somewhere!

Ate an organic apple while heading to work. About a few hours later my stomach started hurting. I drank water, thinking maybe it would ease it. No, tried eating at brake. Couldn't finish my food, after that went to do my task and I just felt like puking. I think it was the skin because it felt like it was stuck in my stomach. Every time I walked, I felt like puking had to leave work early. It felt like someone was ripping apart my stomach. I had to stop on the side of the road because I couldn't make it home and kept puking. Never had that before...

Check out FODMAP diet. It's originally for people who suffer from IBS but due to our uniqueness which includes our digestive tracts, different people can be "sensitive" to different foods. Some people are lactose intolerant, others go gluten free etc etc. We, myself included have issues w/apples. I also have issues w/onions & garlic.
So, here's an article check it out.http://ibs.about.com/od/treatmentofibs/a/The-Fodmap-Theory-For-IBS.htm

I feel you, but mine is worse. As soon as I take the first bite I get that feeling. One time I ended up going home early from school because of it.

I feel very very sick today after eating 2 organic apples. The same happened yesterday but I didn't think it could be the apples. I also feel dizzy. But a lot of air and gurgling in my stomach. I don't even like apples that much but they seemed like an innocent thing. :(

Apples, cucumbers and pretzels will give me a gag reflex after they have settled in my stomach for a bit. They don’t make me feel sick but sometimes the gag reflex is so strong that I will throw up. It happened to me again today and have been searching for an answer on google because I know there isn’t a doctor out there that would even attempt to find an answer.

i also think apples caused my nausea today, and just found this post. The other info I found on the internet doesn't make sense. Apparently there are two allergies, one related to birch and another to peaches. When I read further, they both get disqualified as causes, but I just spent the last four hours apple nauseus and this is not the first time. if you figure it out, please post about it!
